Italy and Malta

, ,

After many months of planning four older Lesbians were off to Italy and Malta. We first landed in Florence and took a bus from the airport to the train station where we met up with one of our groups partners, who had lived for 17 years in Florence . We stayed at a wonderful little place called the Althea Rooms. 4 very full days in Florence with buses and walking till we dropped. Th Duomo, David and so much more around every corner, on every wall in every square. I could have spent the whole trip there however, onward to Rome. Leaving our escort to return to Barcelona, we went forward.                                                                                    Rome is huge, efvery thing is huge. The squares, the statues. Truly amazing and overwhelming. We stayed at a B&B run by Luz. Luz is from Columbia and spoke Spanish, very little English but no problem. Missed seeing lots but also saw lots. Walking and buses again.                                                                                                                                                                     Onward to the next destination, Sorrento. Tain, taxi and ferry.  Well acutally St. Agnello just above Sorrento where we stayed at a B&B convent. This was a stepping off place to go to Pompei and Pasetum. First Paestum where we had a guide, Silvia Braggio (founsd her in Rick Steves Italy Book). She was so knowledgeable and brought history alive. The muesum at Paestum had the Diver tomb. Marvelous!!! On to Pompei next day, no guide this time. Silvia not availble and we got a map so onward. Hot, confusing. Big mistake! Hire a guide it wil be worth it.    We also used AldoLimos to get to Paestum, Pompei and Naples                                                                                                                                                                                                              Next, train from Naples to Catania, Sicily. All day trip but just beautiful countryside and a chance to rest our feet. Took a Hop on Hop Off bus tour of Catania. Wonderful  Wish we had more than just one day there so much to see. Stayed at another B&B Civitas. Good location. Lots to see just walking.

Now on to the real reason for this trip. One of the 4 of us had been to Malta when she was 19 to visit her Grandparents, aunt and uncle. That was in 1949. Taxi to Pozzallo to catch the ferry to Valletta , Malta. Landing in Malta, suddenly we realise that we only have the name not the address of the place we were to stay. Yikes. Walking out of the ferry area multiple taxi drivers are viving for the riders. One grabs one of our bags and takes around the corner throws the bag into the trunck and says , yes he knows the place we are talking about. Well he doesn't, Mr Toads wild ride with him yelling out the window to other taxi drivers to find the place. Finally he stops where we can get a Wi-Fi signal and we get an address. Well dear readers we had done what we should not have dojne and had gone with a driver that was not a real Taxi. The saving grace is that he got us to where we needed to go. We did not however get his number for any other rides. The place we stayed was Sliema at the Slimiza Suites, Great B&B, well located with a delightful owner Ruth Sarah Farrell.

We found our companion's Grandparents home in Rabat and located a possible distant relative. Went to Mdina ( the silent city,)  and Ta'quil .Again buses, walking and this time a carrage ride in Mdna. We also took another ferry trip to the island of Gozo.all beautiful all worth the trip.

Never a bad meal in either Italy or Malta. Never enough time but I guess that is why you travel to try. This was a different method of travel for me . Usually I am just winging it when I go some where, finding a place to stay when it gets dusk, however given the ages and the fact that there where 4 of us, planning our places was what was needed. Our ages 69, 70, 74 and 84. All but myself retired and on pensions so cost was important. All the places were reasonable ( 30-45 Euros/night ).

Last 2 days of the 3 week trip was a plane to Rome, taxi to train station and back to Florence. One full day in Florence and the the long stretch home.

Yes we are all still talking to each other, no explosions, no arguing, just beaty and fun.

Travel on, Maryella
